How it's done
Your elf is sitting on a shelf or tabletop looking slightly sorry for themselves after a pretend tumble. You simply place a handful of colorful band-aids across their arms and legs to make it look like they had a rough night of flying. Place a small scrap of paper nearby with a handwritten note that says I need a hug. This setup takes less than five minutes to arrange and requires zero cleanup in the morning. Why this works

If it doesn't go to plan
If the elf ends up too well-hidden and the kids can't find it, nudge them with a vague hint ("Looks like our elf went somewhere cozy"), the discovery is the point.
