Your elf is spending the night in a cozy little tent made from an open hardcover book stood up on its edge. Tucked inside with a small hand towel serving as a makeshift sleeping bag, the elf holds a tiny flashlight to create a dim glow for reading. Why this works

If the elf ends up too well-hidden and the kids can't find it, nudge them with a vague hint ("Looks like our elf went somewhere cozy"), the discovery is the point.
