How it's done
Your elf is positioned on the kitchen counter as if they are preparing to bake a batch of holiday cookies. You will need to arrange a small pile of flour, a stick of butter, and a bag of sugar around them to make it look like a busy workspace. While this setup takes less than five minutes to arrange, be prepared to wipe down the counter afterward since flour tends to settle into every crack. This scene works best for children aged four to ten who enjoy helping in the kitchen. Inspired by So Easy Being Green.

Why this works
The kitchen is the first room most kids visit in the morning, for cereal, for milk, for the toaster. An elf scene staged here has the highest odds of being the first thing your child spots and shouts about. Difficulty 2 means it uses items you already own and takes about five minutes, quick but visibly intentional.

If it doesn't go to plan
If the elf ends up too well-hidden and the kids can't find it, nudge them with a vague hint ("Looks like our elf went somewhere cozy"), the discovery is the point.
