Elf Stuck in a Balloon

Living Room Difficulty ●●●●○ Messiness ●○○○○ Ages 5–12

How it's done

Your elf appears trapped inside a large, partially inflated balloon resting on your living room table. Because the elf is contained within the rubber walls, this setup creates a funny visual without creating any clutter or cleanup for you. Use a clear or lightly patterned balloon so the kids can easily identify their friend looking out from the center. This project takes about twenty minutes to stretch the opening and carefully insert the doll, so plan to set this up while the house is quiet. Inspired by Ashlina Kaposta.

Pets in the house?

Should be fine around pets as long as you place it out of reach.

Why this works

Living-room scenes are the most photogenic. The Christmas tree, the couch, the mantel all frame the elf beautifully for the family photo you'll actually take (and maybe post). Difficulty 4 is an ambitious scene that rewards the extra effort, the kind of moment kids remember years later.

If it doesn't go to plan

If the elf ends up too well-hidden and the kids can't find it, nudge them with a vague hint ("Looks like our elf went somewhere cozy"), the discovery is the point.
