How it's done
Your elf sits on the kitchen counter tonight, holding a permanent marker with a few bananas or oranges arranged in front of them. The fruit features simple, hand-drawn faces that look like the elf spent the night doodling. Why this works

If it doesn't go to plan
If the elf ends up too well-hidden and the kids can't find it, nudge them with a vague hint ("Looks like our elf went somewhere cozy"), the discovery is the point.
