Golden Treasure Hunt
How it's done
Your elf has discovered a stash of loot in the living room and is standing guard over a small treasure chest overflowing with gold-foiled chocolate coins. When your children wake up, they will find their scout acting like a pirate protecting his hard-earned bounty. This setup takes about ten minutes to arrange and involves almost zero cleanup beyond picking up a few stray wrappers. If you have a dog, be sure to place the chest on a high shelf since chocolate is toxic to pets. This activity was Inspired by The Soccer Mom Blog.

Why this works
Living-room scenes are the most photogenic. The Christmas tree, the couch, the mantel all frame the elf beautifully for the family photo you'll actually take (and maybe post). This mid-difficulty scene trades a little more setup time for a bigger 'wow' moment when your kids walk in.
Variations
- Pet-safe version: Try Magic Door Entrance , same idea, but no chocolate, loose candy, or floor-level hazards. Swap the elements that worry you and keep the rest.

If it doesn't go to plan
If the elf ends up too well-hidden and the kids can't find it, nudge them with a vague hint ("Looks like our elf went somewhere cozy"), the discovery is the point.
