Help Me Underpants Elf
How it's done
Stick your elf to the refrigerator door using a few sturdy strips of clear tape. The kids will see him stranded there wearing only a pair of tiny doll underpants and holding a handwritten note that says help me. This setup is a guaranteed hit for kids aged four to ten because they find this specific humor hilarious. It requires zero cleanup in the morning, and you can even use a child's clean sock if you do not have doll clothes on hand. This kitchen scene was inspired by Ashlina Kaposta and takes under five minutes to assemble.
Should be fine around pets as long as you place it out of reach.
Why this works
The kitchen is the first room most kids visit in the morning, for cereal, for milk, for the toaster. An elf scene staged here has the highest odds of being the first thing your child spots and shouts about. Difficulty 2 means it uses items you already own and takes about five minutes, quick but visibly intentional.

If it doesn't go to plan
If the elf ends up too well-hidden and the kids can't find it, nudge them with a vague hint ("Looks like our elf went somewhere cozy"), the discovery is the point.
