How it's done

Your elf is cozying up inside a kitchen mug filled with dry cocoa mix and a handful of miniature marshmallows. Drape a small scrap of fabric or a doll blanket over his shoulders to make it look like he is settling in for a long winter nap. This setup takes less than two minutes to arrange, and you can easily swap the cocoa for cereal if you are worried about spills. It is a perfect, low-effort morning surprise for toddlers and grade schoolers alike. Inspired by Make the Best of Everything.

Pets in the house?

Should be fine around pets as long as you place it out of reach.

Why this works

The kitchen is the first room most kids visit in the morning, for cereal, for milk, for the toaster. An elf scene staged here has the highest odds of being the first thing your child spots and shouts about. At difficulty 1, this scene is specifically designed to be set up in under two minutes. Busy nights are why this one exists.

Variations

  • Bigger-kid twist: For an older crowd that sees through simple scenes, step up to Buddy Four Food Groups , same room, cleverer setup.

If it doesn't go to plan

If the elf ends up too well-hidden and the kids can't find it, nudge them with a vague hint ("Looks like our elf went somewhere cozy"), the discovery is the point.
