How it's done
Your elf is parked on a bedside table or nightstand, holding an invisible ink pen with a trail of secret notes scattered nearby. When your children wake up, they use the attached UV light cap to reveal hidden drawings or messages written on blank slips of paper. Why this works

If it doesn't go to plan
If the elf ends up too well-hidden and the kids can't find it, nudge them with a vague hint ("Looks like our elf went somewhere cozy"), the discovery is the point.
