Lock the Kids in Their Bedrooms

How it's done

Transform the bedroom doorway into a hilarious obstacle course by crisscrossing streamers of crepe paper across the frame. Secure the paper ends with small bits of blue-tac so they pull away easily when your kids push through in the morning. Your elf sits nearby, looking smug as if they just finished the setup. This activity takes five minutes and is perfect for children ages three to ten. If you have a cat or dog, skip the lower sections to avoid shredded paper. Pets in the house?

Crepe paper trailing near the floor can be shredded or eaten by pets.

Why this works

Bedroom scenes work best as an evening reveal, kids find the elf when they climb into bed. Bedtime is when a cozy, low-mess scene lands hardest. Difficulty 2 means it uses items you already own and takes about five minutes, quick but visibly intentional.

Variations

  • Pet-safe version: Try Balloon Door Crepe Blockade , same idea, but no chocolate, loose candy, or floor-level hazards. Swap the elements that worry you and keep the rest.
  • Bigger-kid twist: For an older crowd that sees through simple scenes, step up to Balloon Door Crepe Blockade , same room, cleverer setup.

If it doesn't go to plan

If the elf ends up too well-hidden and the kids can't find it, nudge them with a vague hint ("Looks like our elf went somewhere cozy"), the discovery is the point.
