How it's done
Sit your elf on a nightstand or the edge of a bed with a small book open in their lap. Arrange a few of your child's favorite plush animals in a semicircle around the elf to make it look like a focused storytime session. This setup takes less than five minutes and requires no cleanup since you just use items already in the bedroom. Why this works

If it doesn't go to plan
If the elf ends up too well-hidden and the kids can't find it, nudge them with a vague hint ("Looks like our elf went somewhere cozy"), the discovery is the point.
