Paper Jukebox Dance Floor
How it's done
Your child will find their elf standing beside a miniature, DIY paper jukebox in the living room, surrounded by tiny cut-out vinyl records scattered across the floor. This setup works best if you print the jukebox template on sturdy card stock beforehand to ensure it stands upright. It takes about 15 minutes of cutting and folding, but the lack of glitter or glue means there is absolutely no cleanup for you later. This setup is perfectly safe for households with curious pets. Inspired by Elf on the Shelf (official).
Should be fine around pets as long as you place it out of reach.
Why this works
Living-room scenes are the most photogenic. The Christmas tree, the couch, the mantel all frame the elf beautifully for the family photo you'll actually take (and maybe post). This mid-difficulty scene trades a little more setup time for a bigger 'wow' moment when your kids walk in.

If it doesn't go to plan
If the elf ends up too well-hidden and the kids can't find it, nudge them with a vague hint ("Looks like our elf went somewhere cozy"), the discovery is the point.
