Spring Toy Stair Race
How it's done
Your elf is ready for the morning race by sitting inside a colorful metal or plastic spring toy. Place the spring on a middle step so it looks like the toy is ready to tumble down the flight of stairs. This setup takes less than five minutes to arrange after the kids are in bed, making it perfect for a busy weeknight. It is a simple, safe scene that works well for children of all ages. This quick idea is Inspired by Elf on the Shelf (official).
Should be fine around pets as long as you place it out of reach.
Why this works
Staircase scenes turn the whole flight into a stage. A candy-cane zip line or TP-tube sled uses the geometry of a normal space in a way kids never expect. Difficulty 2 means it uses items you already own and takes about five minutes, quick but visibly intentional.
If it doesn't go to plan
If the elf ends up too well-hidden and the kids can't find it, nudge them with a vague hint ("Looks like our elf went somewhere cozy"), the discovery is the point.
