How it's done

Place your elf inside an empty laundry basket in the laundry room to stage a quick toy collection. Your child will find the scout sitting among a few of their outgrown items with a handwritten note explaining that the toys are being sent to the North Pole for a safety inspection. This setup requires zero cleanup and is perfect for a busy weeknight when you need an easy win for children ages three to ten. It is a simple way to encourage decluttering while keeping the elf safely out of reach of curious pets. Inspired by Mrs. Ashley French.

Pets in the house?

Should be fine around pets as long as you place it out of reach.

Why this works

Laundry room scenes play the comedy of chores. The elf caught 'folding' mismatched socks or 'ironing' chips is a scene kids associate with their own daily routine. Difficulty 2 means it uses items you already own and takes about five minutes, quick but visibly intentional.

Variations

If it doesn't go to plan

If the elf ends up too well-hidden and the kids can't find it, nudge them with a vague hint ("Looks like our elf went somewhere cozy"), the discovery is the point.
